The ant genus Aphaenogaster Mayr (Formicidae) is a ubiquitous member of the eastern deciduous forest fauna. This genus contains species groups that are difficult to separate morphologically; however, use of a genetic marker could aid in species identification. By looking at a portion of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene, genetic variability and species identification within the genus is examined from specimens collected throughout the Southeastern United States.
