As the field of forensic entomology is working to resolve problem areas addressed by the National Research Council Report (Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward) collection bias is often overlooked. An example of how collection bias can affect developmental timelines can be demonstrated in Forensic Entomology Class projects. Entomological data collected by students show that collection bias is occurring and that this bias can create misinterpretations of the successional patterns. Two years of successional pattern data from Forensic Entomology Classes were compared to collections taken simultaneously by the author. This comparison provides insight into the correlation of collection bias and the amount of entomological training and background necessary for forensic entomology standards.
