A preliminary phylogeny based on DNA sequence data and morphology for pterostichine carabid beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae) will be presented. Implications for classification of this large (>5000 spp) worldwide group will discussed. The results suggest novel relationships among austral groups (Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia & New Guinea) that have implications for biogeography of the region and the evolution of larval brooding behaviors in Southern Hemisphere species.
