Red maples trees are among the most commonly planted landscape tree in the southeastern U.S. but of them are negatively affected by gloomy scale (Melanaspis tenebricosa) and maple spider mites (Oligonychus aceris).  We will discuss our research on the mechanisms behind these pest outbreaks on red maple trees and how other arthropods within these urban ecosystems are affected.
