Wednesday, November 13, 2013: 4:15 PM
Meeting Room 18 B (Austin Convention Center)
The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences (HCIFS) has hired the first full time forensic entomologist in the medical examiner’s office setting in the United States. This position has opened up the opportunity for the forensic entomologist to be a part of the entire death investigation process, from scene investigation to autopsy. With the this new information and with so many opportunities to be involved in casework new challenges have arisen which have revealed gaps in our current knowledge and the practical applicability of basic research to applied casework. This presentation will discuss how we are developing the forensic entomology program at the HCIFS and where current challenges lie in making forensic entomology a part of the regular services offered by the ME’s office.
