Diversity and distribution of Chironominae (Chironomidae: Diptera) larvae from Balaghat ranges in Maharashtra, India

ABSTRACT

           The present communication deals with the studies on diversity and distribution of larval Chironomids from Balaghat ranges of Maharashtra India. In present study subfamily Chironominae is described with twenty one species belonging to seven genera. Genera Chirnomus, Cryptochironomus, Cryptotendipes, Dicrotendipes, Glyptotendipes, Kiefferulus and Polypedilum are recorded during the study. Genus Chironomus showed high diversity with five species. Genera Dicrotendipes and Polypedilum are recorded with four species each followed by genus Kiefferulus with three species. Genus Glyptotendipes is reprsented by two species whereas genera Cryptochironomus and Cryptotendipes are reprsented by single species each.
