ABSTRACT
The tiger moth genus Virbia Walker is comprised of small to
medium sized, brightly colored moths distributed from south
central Canada to central South America. Included in this genus
are model species for study in lepidopteran pheromones and
tiger moth morphology. Here, we reconstruct a
phylogeny to provide an evolutionary framework for these
studies, and to obtain additional insight into the biogeography
of the genus. DNA sequences from 28S D2 rDNA,
mitochondrial Cyt-B, RpS5, and cytochrome oxidase (COI) gene
fragments were collected from 11-12 species to reconstruct the
phylogeny of the Nearctic members of this genus.
