Laricobius nigrinus is reared and released in the eastern US as a component of the biological control program for hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), Adelges tsugae (Annand) (Hemiptera: Adelgidae).  This predator species is challenging to maintain in the laboratory during the summer when they aestivate in the soil.  Several experiments were conducted in the field in Tennessee to gain insight into factors that influence the survival of L. nigrinus through the summer.  Results of these experiments will enhance rearing efforts and facilitate modifications in site selection and methodology of field releases.
