Behavioral responses of mosquitoes (Culex sp.) to the presence of pyrethroids treated net

The nuisance and disease transmission associated with mosquitoes and the need to proffer solution by man may have informed the one sided quest for a solution that deters the culprit-mosquito. One of such approaches is the use of Insecticide Treated Net (ITN). Unfortunately little or no attention is given to the response/reaction of the mosquito to such treatments other than the possibility of insecticidal resistance development (against the insecticide). An attempt is made in this study to observe and analyze the behavioral response of mosquitoes to the use of pyrethroid treated insecticide net under varying conditions within a simulated room. Knockdown response was readily noticeable (60-95%) within the first two hours of exposure) thus confirming pyrethroids as a good knockdown agent. A ventilated room as expected improved the longevity of the mosquitoes exposed to Deltamethrin slightly as knockdowns were reduced and delayed for about two hours. The introduction of blood meal factor showed no significant difference in terms of Knockdowns
