The butterflies is one of the best known groups of insects in Mexico, mainly on the southwest portion of the country; however there are many places along the country that have only a few records of butterflies.
The state of Veracruz occupies the third place in species richness of butterflies, just below the states of Oaxaca and Chiapas. However the studies in this state had been focused on a few localities like Cordoba, Los Tuxtlas, Xalapa and Teocelo. Although Misantla has some records of butterflies, no systematic faunistic studies for these insects had been made; this is the first systematic faunistic study of butterflies of Misantla. In this work we got the list of species, the distribution and the food preferences of the butterflies.
For Misantla, 202 species were collected, that represents 27% of the butterflies of the state, these species belong to five families. Within families species richness is distributed as follows: Nymphalidae (112), then Lycaenidae (37), Pieridae (33), Papilionidae (11) and Riodinidae (9).
