The chloropid fly genus Goniaspis Duda is revised based on morphological characters of adult specimens. The genus contains nine described species restricted to the northern Neotropical Region. Although species within the genus are distinguished mainly on colour characters, other generic-level characters are shared, in various combinations, with other chloropid genera. This has led to confusion about the placement of Goniaspis within the family. Most existing classifications place Goniaspis in the tribe Hippelatini, but that is based on the possession of a single “key” character – a long ventral hind-tibial spur - and not on an explicit phylogenetic analysis. Based on analysis of a larger set of character states, Goniaspis is transferred from Hippelatini to the tribe Elachipterini. Elachipterini currently comprises ten genera, although their limits and the monophyly of the tribe have not been subjected to phylogenetic analysis. The current recognition of some small autapomorphic genera within this tribe may render other genera paraphyletic. In addition, some undescribed species related to Goniaspis have intermediate combinations of character states that raise questions as to generic limits in this tribe
