The Formosan subterranean termite (FST), Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) is a destructive, introduced pest species indigenous to Southeast China. In areas where it is established the FST is capable of supplanting native subterranean termites as the primary structural pest species. Formosan subterranean termites also routinely attack standing live trees and can cause extensive damage resulting in the weakening of the tree potentially to the point of failure. Because this insect poses an economic threat to wooden structures and live trees, it is imperative to document its increasing distribution throughout Louisiana and other southern states. Few targeted surveys of the state of Louisiana have been conducted. As a result, reported distributions and new parish records have, at times, been based on unsubstantiated reports and local newspaper accounts for which no reference specimens were kept. We report herein the results of an ongoing survey initiated in the spring of 2006 with the goal of documenting the expanding distribution of the FST in Louisiana and confirming unsubstantiated reports. Survey strategies include active searches of standing live trees, structures, and landscape timbers as well as requests for sample submissions mailed to pest control operators, mosquito abatement districts, and other cooperators throughout the state. To date, localized FST populations have been identified in six previously unconfirmed parishes. Future plans include potentially expanding survey efforts to adjacent states as well as organizing area-wide control measures in areas with recent point source introductions.
