Variant eggs were characterized as having a chorionic plastron covering over most of the egg deck, while normal eggs have a fully exposed deck. Approximately 1% of the total eggs produced by the An. gambiae colony at Michigan State University are of the variant type. Individual females known to produce variant eggs will do so at a frequency of 90% in any one ovipositional cycle, but are also capable of producing entire clutches of normal eggs in subsequent cycles. Weight loss of An. gambiae eggs of the normal phenotypes vs. variant eggs was measured on a Cahn C-35 microbalance. After 72 h of exposure to low relative humidity, normal and variant eggs did not show differing rates of weight loss (p=.97). We postulate that normal and variant eggs should have similar survivorship under dry conditions.
