The many definitions of integrated pest management

It seems that everyone these days is practicing Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Because there are now over 65 definitions of IPM, most anyone should be able to find one that fits what they are already doing. Efforts at the national level to come up with a workable definition of IPM have only added to the confusion. At the heart of the matter is the meaning of the term “integrated.” Historically, integrated referred to the use of multiple tactics in a coordinated or compatible way, both within a class of pests (vertical integration) and between classes of pests (horizontal integration). Just how many IPM programs meet this standard for integration is open to debate. If real integration cannot be achieved, then perhaps IPM should be dismissed as a failed paradigm.
