Coccinellids from various habitats in eastern South Dakota

Louis Hesler, lhesler@ngirl.ars.usda.gov, USDA-ARS-NGIRL, 2923 Medary Ave, Brookings, SD and Cecil Tharp, ctharp@montana.edu, Montana State University, Dept. of Entomology, Bozeman, MT.

Various habitats in eastern South Dakota were surveyed for ladybird beetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Two exotic ladybird beetles, Coccinella septempunctata and Harmonia axyridis, were found in all habitats. A native species, Psyllobora vigintimaculata, was prominent in pine. Three native species, previously common in the region, were not sampled. Similarity in the coccinellid fauna is compared among habitats.

Species 1: Coleoptera Coccinellidae Psyllobora vigintimaculata
Species 2: Coleoptera Coccinellidae Coccinella septempunctata (seven-spotted lady beetle)
Species 3: Coleoptera Coccinellidae Harmonia axyridis (multicolored Asian lady beetle)
Keywords: ladybird beetles, similarity index
