Imported fire ants, Solenopsis spp. in forested landscapes

Timothy Menzel, tom10@msstate.edu and T. Evan Nebeker, enebeker@entomology.msstate.edu. Mississippi State University, Entomology and Plant Pathology, 9775, Mississippi State, MS

Locations within forests where imported fire ants (Solenopsis spp.) occur are being compared with randomly selected locations. As of June 2005, 21 randomly selected locations and 6 locations with imported fire ants have been surveyed. Four of the randomly selected locations also contained imported fire ants. More area will be surveyed in August of 2005. Site factors such as ant community composition, vegetative cover and soil characterisitcs are being collected for each location. Landscape factors such as percentage of forest cover and length of road surface within 0.5, 1.0 and 3.0 km are also being assessed for each location. Discriminant analysis will be used to determine what factors separate locations with imported fire ants from randomly selected locations.

Species 1: Hymenoptera Formicidae Solenopsis invicta (red imported fire ant)
Species 2: Hymenoptera Formicidae Solenopsis richteri (black imported fire ant)
Species 3: Hymenoptera Formicidae Monomorium minimum
