The BioMasher Sample Preparation Device was developed by Nippi Inc. (Tokyo, Japan) to prepare bovine brain cell lysates prior to testing for BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalitis). We have found that the BioMasher is a versatile tool well suited for generating cell lysates from a wide variety of insect samples. These cell lysates can be used for downstream genomic and proteomic applications. Several insect species were evaluated by PCR using samples prepared with the BioMasher. We compared direct PCR of cell lysates to DNA isolated using standard genomic DNA extraction methods. In addition, we have evaluated several protein extracts created using the Biomasher. We found that the Biomasher provides a simple and rapid method for researchers to prepare insect cell lysates that can be used for a variety of downstream applications.
