An inventory of the caterpillars, including their foodplants and parasitoids, occurring within the boundaries of the Area de Conservacion Guanacaste, Costa Rica, has been in progress since 1978. About 3,000 species of caterpillars among the 8-9,000 species of Lepidoptera have been associated with their adult life stage, an event required for accurate identification. We present portraits of a select few of these species in the form of an image of the caterpillar and an essay on behavior and ecology.
