Post-release monitoring of Galerucella spp: an establishment study for biological control of purple loosestrife in the Utica Marsh

Laura Anne Weiser Erlandson, weiserl@sunyit.edu, SUNY Institute of Technology, PO BOX 3050, Utica, NY and Mary Jane Krupski, Krupski6@aol.com, Utica Marsh Council, Inc, PO BOX 73, Utica, NY.

The Utica marsh is a 213 acre wetland located in Utica, New York that has been invaded by purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria L). In an attempt to control this invasive weed, a coordinated release of Galerucella spp. in several pre-selected areas was executed involving six high school groups under the direction of the Utica Marsh Council. This study documented the establishment of Galerucella spp. and subsequent damage to purple loosestrife at six release sites throughout the marsh from June until September, 2005.
