Do insects with different feeding habits elicit a different response from plants?

The emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC) released from broad bean, Vicia faba L. was studied. VOC were collected upon insect feeding and compare among insects with different feeding habits and control plants. Black bean aphid, Aphis fabae Scopoli (Homoptera: Aphididae) and beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) reared under controlled laboratory conditions were used. VOC profiles were analyzed and the major (chemical) functional groups were quantified and tentatively identified using a GC-FID (SPB-1, 15m x 0.25mm x 0.25mm) and GC-MS (HP-1MS, 30m x 0.25mm x 0.25). Quantitative differences in VOC components are reported.
