ENVIDOR® (spirodiclofen) is a novel acaricidal
active ingredient from the new chemical class of tetronic acids. This new
contact acaricide represents a new mode of action, inhibition of lipid biosynthesis,
that is active against many economically important mite species infesting a
broad range of perennial crops. On Florida citrus, the citrus rust mite (CRM),
Phyllocoptruta oleivora (Ashmead), and the pink citrus rust mite (PCRM),
Aculops pelekassi (Keifer) are the only two mite species recognized as
economic pests on Florida citrus. In 14 field tests conducted between 2002 and
2004 in commercial citrus groves in Florida, ENVIDOR, formulated as a 240 g
AI/liter suspension concentrate (SC), at rates of 13 fl. oz/acre (228 g ai/ha)
alone and 20 fl. oz/acre (350 g ai/ha) in combination with horticultural spray
oil provided excellent initial and residual control of both CRM and PCRM, equal
or superior to the commercial standards Agrimek (abamectin) with oil and Nexter
(pyridaben). Due to the new mode of action that shows no cross-resistance to
commercially available acaricides in the market, ENVIDOR serves as a powerful
tool for pest management in Florida citrus.
