Field surveys for potential aphid vectors of plum pox virus

Greg Krawczyk, gxk13@psu.edu and Larry A. Hull, lah4@psu.edu. Pennsylvania State University, Department of Entomology, 290 University Drive, P.O. Box 330, Biglerville, PA

During the 2000-2005 seasons aphid surveys were conducted to identify the potentials vectors of Plum Pox Virus (Potyvirus PPV). The qualitative (suction samples) and quantitative (yellow sticky traps) studies were conducted in commercial stone fruit orchards, ornamental trees and sentinel trees located in PPV quarantined areas of Pennsylvania. Over 50 aphid species, both migratory and colonizers, were collected and identified from various Prunus hosts during the project.

Species 1: Hemiptera Aphididae Myzus persicae (Green peach aphid)
Species 2: Hemiptera Aphididae Aphis spiraecola (Spirea aphid)
Keywords: virus vector, plum pox
