Effects of reduced risk insecticides on the soybean natural enemy community

Natural enemies can be important components for management of soybean aphids, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae). Currently, pyrethroids and organophosphates are frequently used to control soybean aphids. Broad-spectrum insecticides are not conducive for use with natural enemies. The objective of this study is to determine the impact of reduced risk insecticides on soybean natural enemy communities. Insecticides are considered reduced-risk when, by mode of action or method of contact, they reduce exposure to non-target species. To determine impacts of broad spectrum insecticides, lambda-cyhalothrin (Warrior®) will be applied and observed. Reduced risk insecticides to be used are the nicotinoids imidacloprid (Gaucho®) and thiamethoxam (Cruiser®)(seed treatments), and imidacloprid (Trimax®)as a foliar treatment and also pymetrozione (Fulfill®), with its own chemistry, as a foliar treatment. Products were selected based on mode of contact (systemic, i.e. seed treatments) and selectivity for aphids (Fulfill). By comparing impacts of these products on natural enemies and soybean aphids, we will be able to determine whether reduced-risk insecticides can be successfully used with beneficial insects. Natural enemies will be sampled three times before application of the insecticides and 3, 7, 14, and 21 days post-application. There will be four different methods of sampling used to determine impacts on soybean aphid natural enemy community. Whole plant counts will be conducted in the field with plants individually inspected by hand. Destructive plant counts will also be taken on above ground biomass of plants by placing them in plastic bags for examination in the laboratory. Natural enemies will also be sampled by sweep netting and yellow sticky cards.
