Using the right ballpoint pens in demonstrating termite trail-following behavior

Termite management is an important component in urban entomology educational program. Demonstration of the unique trail-following in subterranean termites is not only essential for extension clients to understand how termites forage and recruit nest-mates to food source but also enhance their enthusiasm in learning. Although ballpoint pen ink has long been used to stimulate such trail-following in termites, failures often occur when different bands are employed. We investigated the effects of different pen brands on the trail-following performance. Here we report the various behavior responses of Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki and Reticulitermes flavepis (Kollar) to different pen brands.

Species 1: Isoptera Rhinotermitidae Coptotermes formosanus (Formosan subterranean termite)
Species 2: Isoptera Rhinotermitidae Reticulitermes flavipes (eastern subterranean termite)
