Integrated control of pecan aphids and mites

James D. Dutcher, dutcher@tifton.uga.edu, Greg E. Fonsah, gfonsah@uga.edu, and Will G. Hudson, wghudson@uga.edu. University of Georgia, Entomology Department, Rainwater Rd., P.O. Box 748, Coastal Plain Experiment Station, Tifton, GA

Aphid and mite infestations on the foliage of commercial pecan trees cause significant, recurring losses in nut production and significant progress has been made in combining biological and chemical control tactics to prevent outbreaks. Research results are reported on the efficacy of selective aphidicides (pymetrozin and thiamethoxam) and a selective miticide (bifenazate) in a pecan orchard where biological controls (ladybeetles, lacewings and phytoseiid mites) are in place. The benefits are weighed against the costs of control.

Species 1: Hemiptera Aphididae Monellia caryella (Blackmargined Aphid)
Species 2: Acari Tetranychidae Eotetranychus hicoriae (Pecan Leaf Scorch Mite)
Keywords: Selective Pesticides, Predators
