A review of Toya spp. (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) from the New World

Anthony Gonzon, atgonzon@udel.edu, University of Delaware, Entomology and Wildlife Ecology, 250 Townsend Hall, Newark, DE

The genus Toya is currently represented in the New World by five species, only one of which, T. propinqua, is found North of Mexico. Specimens collected during the Great Smoky Mountains All Taxon Biotic Inventory (ATBI) appeared to be Toya, but not T. propinqua, leading to this review of New World Toya. In this review, all available New World Toya specimens were examined in addition to the type species, T. attenuata. The definition of the genus is emended, with reference to the New World species, and the generic placement of each species reconsidered. Four species do not fit the emended definition of Toya. Toya venilia and T. argentinensis more closely resemble Syndelphax (along with Delphacodes fallax and D. dolosa). Toya iaxartes is not a Toya, but will not be placed at this time. Toya boxi is closely allied with Delphacodes axonopi, D. nigra, and D. idonea, and these species appear to represent a distinct clade which will be segregated into their own genus. Delphacodes wetmorei, belongs to Toya and is hereby transferred to the genus. Finally, the specimens from the ATBI that inspired this review were determined to be Delphacodes idonea and Toya propinqua.
