Phenology of the annual bluegrass weevil in golf course landscapes

The Annual Bluegrass Weevil (ABW) is a burgeoning pest in high maintenance turfgrass in the Northeast. In order to better target control tactics, we need to strengthen our understanding of this insect’s association with the golf course landscape. Our objectives were to describe the abundance, population fluctuation and synchrony, number of generations, and timing of the life stages. ABW life stages were collected weekly from three fairway transects in each of two sites in central New York from April to October over 2004 and 2005. Adults were sampled with soap flushes, and larvae from soil cores. Five instars were identified from measurements of the head capsule width. In 2004, first instars of the initial generation were detected in the second week of May for both golf courses. Peak abundance of immature stages was observed in late May followed by the emergence of callow adults in late June. One generation was observed at both sites with evidence for a second smaller generation. The timing of the life stages and generations could be quantified through an analysis of cumulative insect-days. This study is being conducted again in 2005 to describe year to year variation. The results will strengthen our understanding of the association between ABW and turfgrass habitats, and contribute to our overall understanding of how landscapes might be interpreted and manipulated in managed ecosystems to improve pest management strategies.
