The hymenopteran ovipositor as a character system for phylogenetic analysis

Charles Andrew Boring, Andy.Boring@uky.edu, University of Kentucky, Entomology, S-225 Ag. Sci. Center North, Lexington, KY

The Hymenoptera female reproductive system is examined for discrete characters in order to elucidate sister-group relationships between and among superfamilies and families within the order. Preliminary results are presented from an ongoing investigation of the morphological variations, with an emphasis on transverse sections of the ovipositor, and general variations of the ovipositor sclerites. The utility of these characters for phylogenetic analysis is discussed.
