Mating behavior of fall armyworm host strains in Florida

Robert L. Meagher, rmeagher@gainesville.usda.ufl.edu and Rod N. Nagoshi, rnagoshi@gainesville.usda.ufl.edu. USDA-ARS CMAVE, 1700 SW 23rd Dr, Gainesville, FL

Fall armyworm is composed of two morphologically similar host strains that seasonally migrate northward from Florida. Previous research suggested that the two strains were active during different times of the scotophase. Tests were completed in several agricultural habitats using mating tables and traps to determine when females were actively releasing pheromone, which host strain males were attracted, and whether females mated with the same or different host strain males.
