Since 1998, the 12.75 ha area known as Louis Armstrong Park has been the site of extensive studies testing the effectiveness of area-wide subterranean termite management. In 2002 and 2003, all detectable subterranean termite colonies were eliminated in the park using the Sentricon® Termite Colony Elimination System. Subterranean termite populations were monitored throughout 2005 in order to observe the reinvasion of termite colonies into the park, which is adjacent to New Orleans’ historic French Quarter. Morphological and mark-recapture data were used to determine that the park was reinvaded by young, incipient colonies founded by alates, as well as larger, more established colonies that moved in from the untreated edges surrounding the park.
