EOL: A database application for presenting results of taxonomic revisions on the web

Norman F. Johnson, Johnson.2@osu.edu and Luciana Musetti, Musetti.2@osu.edu. Ohio State University, Entomology, 1315 Kinnear Road, Columbus, OH

We have developed and implemented a dynamic, database-driven application for presenting the results of taxonomic research. General categories of data that are presented are nomenclature and taxonomic synopses, literature, geographic distribution, biological relationships, images, characters, and individual specimen records. Data are captured using web applications that allow for any valid user to enter and modify information. The application implements the DiGIR protocol and DarwinCore and SDD data standards. Results from our research on the insect family Scelionidae are available at URL

http://atbi.biosci.ohio-state.edu:210/hymenoptera/eol_scelionidae.home

The programming allows for customization to deliver content for any taxon. The application is developed in an Oracle environment, using PL/SQL and external Perl scripting. This material is based on work supported by the National Science Foundation under grant No. DEB-0344034.
