The insect order Orthoptera is comprised of 20,000 species in 28 families and 2 suborders. At present the mitochondrial genomes of only two species in two families have been sequenced. This project provides a third complete genome from the family Eumastacidae, with partial genomes from the families Tettigoniidae, Cylindrachetidae, Myrmecophilidae, Cantitopidae, Raphidophoridae, and Acrididae. The addition of these genomes provides a more comprehensive view of mitochondrial genome evolution and phylogenetic relationships within Orthoptera. Genome structure and rearrangements are presented and a molecular based phylogeny is proposed for the order Orthoptera.
