Tunneling and mortality of eastern subterranean termites (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) in soil treated with neonicotinoid termiticides

Philip G. Koehler, pgk@ufl.edu, University of Florida, Department of Entomology & Nematology, Building 970 Natural Area Drive, PO Box 110620, Gainesville, FL

Soil was treated with various concentrations of the neonicotinoid termiticides imidacloprid, acetamidprid, and thiamethoxam. A 1, 5, and 50 mm depth of treated soil was placed in glass tubes with worker termites. Distance of termite tunneling into treated soil was measured, and mortality of termites was counted at 7 d. Surviving termites were transferred to untreated Petri dishes, and mortality was counted weekly for an additional 1-2 wk. The three neonicotinoids were non-repellent termiticides characterized by delayed mortality caused by contact with soil treated with sufficient concentrations of termiticide.

Species 1: Isoptera Rhinotermitidae Reticulitermes flavipes (Eastern Subterranean Termite)
