Arthur Cushman, USDA illustrator of insect life histories

Joel Floyd, joel.p.floyd@aphis.usda.gov, USDA-APHIS-PPQ, Pest Detection and Management Programs, 4700 River Road, Unit 137, Riverdale, MD

Examples of USDA illustrator, Arthur Cushman’s color work are displayed. Self taught, and son of an insect taxonomist, Cushman illustrated insects at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History for over 25 years. He is best known for his illustrations of pest insect life cycles that appeared in the 1952 Yearbook of Agriculture entitled "Insects". Original color plates, housed at the Natural History Museum’s Entomology Illustration Archives, were scanned at high resolution, and are now available on the Internet for public use.
