Comparison of two methods for locating colonies of Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) in rural habitats

Christopher Werle, cwerle@ars.usda.gov, USDA-ARS, 306 S. High St, Poplarville, MS and Nathan Cottrell, ncottrell@ars.usda.gov, USDA-ARS, FSTRU, 306 S. High Street, Poplarville, MS.

Aspen stakes were placed around trees at twenty-four sites in Poplarville, MS to locate foraging colonies of Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki from 9-03 to 6-04. The same twenty-four sites were then examined using acoustical detection equipment from 3-05 to 9-05. Acoustical monitoring is not effective before June in southern Mississippi due to C. formosanus inactivity, while Aspen stakes can be a more reliable year-round monitoring method. Acoustical monitoring can be more effective at detecting C. formosanus colonies in warmer months because some colonies do not forage out to the Aspen stakes.
