Extensive coastal salt marshes in the state of Florida produce enormous broods of the salt marsh mosquito Ochlerotatus taeniorhynchus, often making coastal habitation unbearable. AgniqueTM MonoMolecular Film (MMF) is a non-petroleum based surface film that acts as a physiochemical agent by altering the mosquito's aquatic habitat. It belongs to the alcohol ethoxylate group of surfactants, which are used in detergent products. MMF disrupts the surface tension of water. MMF kills mosquito larvae and pupae by making it impossible to keep their breathing tubes above the water's surface and effectively drowns them. Also, female mosquitoes are entrapped and drowned when they contact water surface to oviposit. AgniqueTM MMF is one of the few pupacides labeled for use in mosquito control. Although MMF is relatively non-toxic, some non-target species inhabiting salt marsh environment may be vulnerable to MMF applications, particularly those arthropods that require attachment to the water surface such as water strider (Gerridae), water boatman (Corixidae) and diving beetle (Hydrophilidae). Currently, there is no information available on the impact of MMF to these organisms in salt marshes. Our research compared the acute and residual impact of MMF to water boatman Trichocorixa sexcincta, an abundant non-target arthropod in the salt marsh environment.
