Establishment of the salvinia weevil, Cyrtobagous salviniae Calder and Sands (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) for biological control of giant salvinia, Salvinia molesta Mitchell (Hydropteridales: Salviniaceae)

Daniel Flores, daniel.flores@usda.gov and Jason W. Carlson, jason.carlson@usda.gov. USDA APHIS PPQ CPHST, Pest Detection, Diagnostics, & Management Laboratory, 22675 N. Moorefield Rd. #S-6414, Edinburg, TX

A total of 658,567 adults, pupae, and larvae of the highly specific biological control agent Cyrtobagous salviniae were released at six sites in East Texas in late 2001 for control of giant salvinia. The agent became quickly established and populations of the federal noxious weed were effectively controlled at four of the release sites. The numbers of insects released and the conditions and time under which establishment occurred are reported.
