Interactions of fruit aromas with synthetic food-odor lures for attraction of Mexican fruit flies

David Robacker, drobacker@weslaco.ars.usda.gov, USDA ARS, 2413 E. Highway 83, Weslaco, TX

Plant essential oils were tested as attractants for the Mexican fruit fly in tests in a citrus orchard. No oils were attractive alone. Most oils either inhibited attraction to a synthetic food-odor lure that emitted ammonia and other amines, or had no effect. Grapefruit and rose oils enhanced attraction to the synthetic food-odor lure.
