Hermetically sealed baits for subterranean termites

A cellulose bait that is hermetically sealed with a non-biodegradable material that can be tunneled or chewed through by termites are placed in soil to intercept termites near a structure. Because the bait is hermetically sealed in a weather-resistant enclosure, it remains in the environment for extended period until termite feeding occurs. Field studies showed that baits remained in tact and active for 12 months in the absence of termites. Termites, when present, readily chewed through the enclosure to feed on baits containing hexaflumuron or noviflumuron, leading to the elimination of subterranean termite colonies near structures. When incorporating with electronic sensors, the baits can be used without manual opening and disturbance of the station, thus bypassing the “station avoidance” by some termite species.
