Gregg Henderson, grhenderson@agctr.lsu.edu and Lixin Mao, lmao@agctr.lsu.edu. Louisiana State University Agricultural Center, Department of Entomology, 404 Life Sciences Bldg, Baton Rouge, LA

Morphological features of the white soldier and soldier of Formosan subterranean termites are described. The functional importance of the white soldier in relation to morphological distinctions is discussed. We argue that the white soldier plays a critical role in colony organization and caste differentiation.
