Minimizing pest interceptions on imports: Case study on the Colombian flower export sector

Rebecca Lee, rebeccal@asocolflores.org, Centro de Innovacion de la Floricultura Colombiana-Centriflores, Colombian Centre for Innovation in Floriculture, Carrera 9 A No. 90-53, Bogota, Colombia

Colombian flowers sent to the US represent approximately 77% of the total volume of imports and of that 85% go through Miami International Airport. Conscious of the potential plant health risk such volumes can represent to both the Colombian exporters and the flower business in the US and other countries, the Colombian Flower Exporters’ Association – Asocolflores – and the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) established an agreement in 1990 for joint supervision of the implementation of national and international regulations by flower producers. An overview will be provided on the export procedures, the potential pests associated with Colombian exports and what Asocoflores is doing about it in partnership with ICA and the support of USDA-APHIS-PPQ among some of the initiatives to mitigate the risk of introductions.
