Extension entomology: What additional tools could be utilized for first detector training?

Kenneth A. Sorensen, kenneth_sorensen@ncsu.edu, North Carolina State University, Department of Entomology, Box 7626, Raleigh, NC

The identification of the pest insect and understanding its life history is the first step to IPM. With invasive insect species, specific monitoring strategies may also need to be employed. Extension and regulatory entomologists have used many approaches to insect recognition and monitoring over the years. For identification, colored line drawings, pictures, reference specimens, pest alert fact sheets and one page colored leaflets have been used historically. In more recent years, digital images, power point presentations, videotapes, field and pocket guides with pictorial and dichotomous keys have become available. Additionally, use of DNA fingerprinting and LUCIDŽ keys has initiated and may increase in the future. A combination of traditional and emerging new resources could assist First Detectors in screening samples, and increase the accuracy and speed of the diagnosis for the identifier. Proper education and implementation of IPM strategies will also be integral to this process.
