William Harry Lange, Jr.’s body of work was proof that the interests of entomologists are often as diverse as the world of insects they study. Dr. Lange’s areas of expertise included pest management and the taxonomy and diversity of economically important aphids and aquatic Lepidoptera. Dr. Lange was a member of the entomology faculty at the University of California, Davis for 37 years, retiring in 1983. Dr. Lange received his doctorate from the UC Berkeley, serving as a researcher there before joining UC Davis. An internationally recognized teacher, writer, taxonomist and researcher, his research on pests of more than 20 major California agricultural commodities earned Dr. Lange the respect of his fellow scientist and the agricultural community. Dr. Lange pioneered the use of Integrated Pest Management and was instrumental in developing the curriculum for the master’s degree in IPM offered at UC Davis. Dr. Lange was a prolific author, publishing over 170 articles, and continued to publish important research well after his retirement. Dr. Lange was an active member of the ESA, serving as president of the Pacific Branch, and was awarded the C.W. Woodworth Award. A lifelong Californian, Dr. Lange elected to stay in the state for his entire career and said the following in summation of his career. "Although the Smithsonian Institution offered me my first job - to do taxonomic work on Lepidoptera -I chose to remain with the University of California, becoming a teacher and agricultural researcher by day and a biosystematist on aquatic Lepidoptera at night. I have never regretted this decision."
