Attracting and killing apple maggot flies: Applied behavioral ecology

This paper has two main foci (1) the design of appropriate traps for attracting and killing temperate tephritid flies in orchards and (2) the deployment of such traps in agricultural settings. With regard to the former, there are several issues, including; visual cues, odor cues, durability, persistence and ease of use. With regard to the latter, several key factors emerge, including: origin of flies (residents vs. immigrants), fly density, fly physiological state and spatial arrangement of traps within and among trees. I use a mathematical model to link all these pieces together into a coherent management strategy.
