Increased international trade and the detection of foreign pests in the United States: Is this a cost of doing business?

During the past 25 years, the importation of foreign agricultural commodities into the United States has increased dramatically. This increased trade has increased the risk of importing foreign pests into the U.S. To reduce the risk of foreign pests becoming established, we must do a better job of preventing pests from entering the U.S. and conduct targeted surveys to detect their presence sooner.
