“Rhagophthalmidae or Phengodidae - rhagophthalmids and their larviform females.”

Marc Branham, MABranham@ifas.ufl.edu, University of Florida, Department of Entomology and Nematology, Natural Area Drive, P.O. Box 110620, Gainesville, FL

The family Phengodidae has been classified into two subfamilies. The Phengodinae are geographically restricted to the New World, while the Rhagophthalminae are restricted to the Old. While rhagophthalmid taxa have been historically placed in multiple cantharoid families (Lampyridae, Drilidae, etc.), this study is the first to examine these taxa within a phylogenetic framework. Here monophyly of the rhagophthalmid clade is tested and its placement relative to the New World phengodids is examined. In addition, comparisons are made between both the larviform females and larvae of these two subfamilies.

Species 1: Coleoptera Rhagophthalmidae Rhagophthalmus sp (Railroad worm)
