Synonymy of the leafhopper genus Homalodisca (Cicadellidae) and a new genus for H. coagulata (Say), the glassy-winged sharpshooter

Stuart H. McKamey, smckamey@sel.barc.usda.gov, Systematic Entomology Laboratory, PSI, ARS-USDA, c/o National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC

Investigation of the morphology of Homalodisca triquetra (Fabricius), which is the type species of the genus, indicates that it belongs to the genus Propetes Walker, whose members are distinguished in part by a complete transverse sulcus anteriorly on the head’s vertex. Because the name of a genus is necessarily tied to that of its type species, and Propetes was described 18 years before Homalodisca Stål, the latter genus will be synonymized under Propetes. The glassy-winged sharpshooter, H. coagulata (Say), and most other species presently in Homalodisca are therefore in need of a new generic name.
