Teaching K-12 students about insects: What works and what doesn't

Erika Andersen, erberri@ufl.edu, University of Florida, Department of Entomology & Nematology, Gainesville, FL

Extension and outreach personnel are often faced with the dilemma of presenting information to an audience whose needs and knowledge with which they are not familiar. Young children learn differently than high schoolers; thus information should not be presented in the same way to the different age groups. There have been numerous studies on the learning styles of children, but most extension agents and outreach specialists do not have the time to sort through these articles and apply the information to their needs. Presented are guidelines for teaching K-12 students about insects, applicable for formal or informal settings. These guidelines are based on personal interviews, group interviews, and observations of kindergarten through high school-age students by the University of Florida Entomology and Nematology Outreach Coordinator.
