Leafhopper (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) sampling in Texas vineyards threatened by Pierce's disease

Forrest Mitchell, f-mitchell@tamu.edu, Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, Dept. of Entomology, 1229 N. Highway 281, Stephenville, TX

Leafhoppers were collected by means of yellow sticky traps in eight Texas vineyards during 2003-2004. Leahoppers collections were summarized by location in the state and within the field. In 2003, all leafhoppers were counted, in 2004 only xylem feeding species were counted. Population curves were drawn and a preliminary sampling program developed for glassy winged sharpshooters. In 2004, attempts were made to assay trap collected hoppers for Pierce's disease by means of ELISA.

Species 1: Hemiptera Cicadellidae Homalodisca coagulata (glassy-winged sharpshooter)
Keywords: grapes, Xylella fastidiosa
