Laboratory assays were performed to determine the fitness of two subspecies of Coleomegilla maculata DeGeer, the pink spotted lady beetle. The biology, humidity requirement and feeding behavior of C. m. fuscilabris and C. m. lengi were studied. For the feeding behavior study, the melon aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover and strawberry (Fragaria annanassa Duchesne) leaflets were used as a substrate. There were not significant differences between the developmental time (egg to adult), number of egg masses and number of eggs per mass between both subspecies. The effect of the humidity on the production of eggs is more severe on C. m. lengi. The feeding behavior of all instars of C. m. fuscilabris on the melon aphid is greater than C. m. lengi. Both subspecies of C. maculata are good predators if augmentative incorporated into an existing biological control program for melon aphid on strawberries.
